overview
A course in celestial navigation, worldwide meteorology
and voyage planning. The course is suitable for competent
navigators planning an ocean passage, or those just
interested in offshore navigation techniques.
The Ocean Theory course includes an introduction to the
principles of celestial navigation, practical use of the
sextant, measurement of time, position fixing by sun and
stars, compass checking and great circle sailing. Worldwide
meteorology, including tropical revolving storms, and
passage planning for ocean voyaging. At the end of the
course you will understand the theory of astro navigation,
and be able to fix position using sun, moon and star sights.
It is not essential to study
before the course, however you may find Celestial Navigation
by Tom Cunliffe helpful.
Pre-requisite experience
Competent in coastal navigation skills RYA Coastal
Skipper / Yachtmaster shorebased certificate recommended.
